J. Bernardo Silva (1979 - )

Born in 1979 in Porto, Portugal.

Graduated from Lisbon’s Escola Superior, studying with Jonathan Luxton. He continued his studies with Ab Koster in Hamburg and with Radovan Vlatkovic and Javier Bonet in Madrid. With Ab Koster he started the study of natural horn. He has received scholarships from Lisbon Polytechnic Institute e Gulbenkian Fundation.

He has presented himself in Portugal, Spain, Finland, Germany and Czech Republic, as a solo performer, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Since 2000 he is a member of the Oporto National Orchestra. As a guest artist he has played with: Gulbenkian Orchestra, Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, OrchestrUtopica, Northern Orchestra of Portugal, Remix Ensembe, Casa da Música Baroque Orchestra, Galiza Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Reina Sofia, among others.

He participated in master classes where he studied with Hermann Baumann, Radovan Vlatkovic, Stefan Dohr, Fergus McWilliam, Ab Koster, Javier Bonet, Bruno Schneider,  Froydis Ree Wekre, Hervé Joulain, Philip Myers, Zdenek Tylsar.

He is a member of the chamber music ensembles Camerata Senza Misura and Tu B’Horn. He has been teaching in several music academies and conservatories, and at the moment is horn teacher at the Espinho Professional Music School and at University of Aveiro.

He has oriented master classes  in several cities and schools of Portugal.  He was awarded the First Prize in the Philip Farkas Competition organized by the International Horn Society in Lahti, Finland in 2002. He has played as soloist with Póvoa de Varzim Symphony Orchestra, EPMVC Symphony Orchestra, Artave Symphony Orchestra and La Valldigna Symphony Orchestra, Valencia (Spain).

In 2004 he was one of the invited soloists in the 36th International Horn Symposium, Valencia (Spain), where he played in recital and solo with orchestra.In 2007 has been edited his first solo record, Lunar Songs. This record presents some world premiere recordings.Recently he played the world premiere recording of ‘Jeanne d’Arc’ from the composer Alex Poelman for the Dutch company Molenaar.Is member of the International Horn Society (IHS). 

J. Bernardo Silva plays on a Paxman horn, mod. 20M, and Josef Klier mouthpieces.
