Edward Ayres d'Abreu (1989 - )

Edward Luiz Ayres d'Abreu was born in 1989. He initiated his piano studies at age five. At Conservatório Nacional, he pursued his piano studies with Ana Sousa Lima and completed a complementary piano course under the supervision of Rui Pinheiro.

Moreover, he took part in diverse chamber music groups coordinated by Armando Vidal as well as Daniel Schvetz and Eli Camargo Jr, both with which he also studied musical composition.

At university, he read Architecture, having interrupted his studies in this field to fully commit himself to a musical degree at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa with Sérgio Azevedo and António Pinho Vargas and, on an Erasmus exchange program, at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) with Gérard Pesson. He also studied with Claude Ledoux (Analysis), Yan Maresz and Yann Geslin (Electronic Music), amongst others, and he met Francesco Filidei and Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber, which were important influences.

He attended to several masterclasses and conferences by Emmanuel Nunes, Marc-André Dalbavie, Ferneyhough, João Pedro Oliveira. He took part in a Java Gamelan course in Lisbon and in the International Summer School of the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied musical composition with Faradz Karaev.

He is preparing a master degree in Musicology (Danièle Pistone, Paris IV – Sorbonne / Paulo Ferreira de Castro, FSCH-UNL, Lisbon). In 2012, Ayres d'Abreu was selected to participate in a Composition Workshop by Luca Francesconi at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (European Network of Opera Academies). He is the founder and president of mpmp, movimento patrimonial pela música portuguesa, and the editor of the magazine glosas.
