Eli Camargo Junior

Eli Camargo Junior was born in São Vicente, SP, in Brazil in 1956.

He studied classical guitar with Henrique Pinto, graduating from Santos Music Faculty. He started his career as a guitarist, both as soloist and as member of chamber music groups, in concerts in Brazil and in Portugal. His most important performances took place in places like the Santos Town Hall Theatre, the São Paulo Art Museum Theatre, Aylton Escobar Hall, the the Lisbon National Conservatory, the Portuguese Authors Society (Lopes Graça: National 80 Year Celebration).

 He participated in improvement courses with Abel Carlevaro, and took a training in “Virtuousness and Portuguese Contemporary Music” at the Lisbon National Conservatory, under the guidance of Prof. José Lopes e Silva. In Brazil he did several courses in Choral and Orchestral Direction (the Campos de Jordão Winter Festival, with Professors Michel Philliphot and hugh Ross), in Portugal (Robert Hullygan) and in Spain (Lérida, Peps Pratts and Erwin Lizt; Alcalá de Henares, Arturo Tamayo).

He has a degree in Composition by the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, where he studied with José Carlos Buonacorso, Christopher Bochmann and António Pinho Vargas.

 Residing in Portugal since 1985, he actively participated in teaching music, teaching Guitar, Analysis and Composition Techniques and Chamber Music in several schools such as: Castelo Branco Regional Conservatory, Torres Novas Music School, Leiria Orfeão, Fundão Music and Dance Academy, Tomar Music School ”Canto Firme”.

He developed several projects, carried out with the support and monitoring of the Education Ministry, namely for Chamber Music “Non-conventional Groupings” and “School Network”, with the participation of the Music Schools from Fundão, Tomar and of the Castelo Branco  Regional Conservatory.

He designed and directed “Ensemble Music Courses” at the Fundão Music and Dance School, where he taught  with Olga Pratts.

Since 1999 he has been teaching Analysis and Composition Techniques and Chamber Music (contemporary repertoire) at the Lisbon National Conservatory.

In the last few years he has dedicated himself to composition. His most recent works are : “Smarinattas”, performed by the “Évorensemble Contemporâneo”  in concert at the Carmo Convent  in Évora; “Four pieces for guitar”, Pedro Rufino, in concert at the 12th Domingos Martins International Festival in Brazil; “Solo” by the guitarist Paulo Amorim, in concert at the Palácio Foz (2005); “In ten tense strings”, Guitar: Paulo Amorim , Cello: Catheryn Strynx, in the Sonata Concertos – at the Music  Amateurs Academy (2005); “Acoustic Interface for a Monument” – advanced students of the National Conservatory, in concert at the Jerónimos Monastery (2005, Jornadas do Património); “Três Momentos de Saudade”, by Guitarra Trio, concert sponsored by radio Antena 2, at the CCB(2006); Project “Mares dantes Navegados”, which included “ “Três peças para Trombonete” and “Canções para o Sem-Fim”, with the participation of advanced students from National conservatory. On this occasion , Eli Camargo directed the premier of “OHR”, by Paulo Brandão, in concerts that took place at the Jerónimos Monastery, at the Contemporary Art National Museum, and at “Mãe d’Água Amoreiras (2006). “Jet Lag”, written on request of the Lisbon Group of Contemporary Music, and by whom it was performed in concerts at Palácio Foz and Lopes Graça Hall (Tomar), directed by Christopher Bochmann. 

“ Seresta Ferida”, for quintet  - dedicated to the soloists Sally Dean and Nuno Silva, by whom it was premiered with soloists from the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, in concert at Palácio Foz – Music Chamber Season of the OML, 2006. Projecto “Quatro Cantos da Casa” that included “Cadenzares”, with the participation of invited sseniorr and soloist students from the National Conservatory. This project resulted in concerts under his direction (CCB – “Dias da Música”, Salão Nobre do Conservatório Nacional), where the composers Yvan Moody, Eurico Carrapatoso, Paulo Brandão, Jorge Machado e Carlos Gomes were also premiered . He is currently drawing up a proposal for his PhD in “Chamber Music, Composition Strategies” at the Évora University, under the supervision of Professor Christopher Bochmann. He also lectures “Music Didactics” at the Piaget Institute in Almada.
