Carlos Marques ( Balaú)

Carlos Manuel Pires Marques was born in Venezuela and has lived in Portugal since he was 10 years old. He started to study music in Banda Marcial de Fermentelos when he was 11 years old, and attended the Conservatório de Música de Aveiro, for the school year of 1984/85; there he studied the clarinet and the ‘cello.He graduated from the Universidade de Aveiro, where he studied with Profs. António Saiote and Luís Silva, and then obtained a Masters degree in Psychology at the Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto.

Carlos Marques is currently studying for a PhD in Psychology.He has participated actively in clarinet Master-Classes with António Saiote, Manuel Jerónimo, Guy Deplus, Guy Dangain, Walter Boykens and Howard Klug. He has also attended Master Classes as an observer with Paul Mayer,  Michel Arrignon, Robert Spring, Gregory Smith, Enrique Peréz Piquer and Philipe Cuper.In 1990, in the Portuguese Youth Music competition he was awarded 1st prize (exequo) in the Chamber Music category. Carlos Marques studied composition with Christopher Bochmann, Emmanuel Nunes, João Pedro Oliveira e Amílcar Vasquez Dias and João Pedro Oliveira.

In 1992 in the “ Prémio Valentino Bucchi ” composition competition in Rome he was awarded “Honours” for his clarinet solo piece.  In 1994 he won 1st prize in a competition for young composers in Portugal and in 2004 the Grande Prémio (1st prize) from the “Maestro Silva Dionísio” composition competition (Portugal). His musical pieces are played around the world, Amsterdam and Utrecht (Holland), Paris (France), Budapest (Hungary), London and Manchester (England), Zurich and Genève (Swiss), México City (Mexico), Caracas (Venezuela), Toronto (Canada) and New York (USA).
