Andrew Batterham is an Australian composer. Classically trained but experienced in the commercial and contemporary music industries, he likes to blend of all of these. His screen and corporate work include short film scores, TV commercials, live arrangements, and music for corporate events, and theatre as well. Andrew is equally at home synthestrating with samples or recording live musicians in the studio. Several playlists and podcasts use his music, whilst some songs have been included in the soundtrack to channel ATV10’s Extreme Sport program. He performs on trumpet or keyboard in lots of ways, currently writing and performing with originals funk band Speakeasy. Andrew’s classical journey includes commissions from the Melbourne Symphony, participation in the Australian Composer’s Orchestral Forum with the Tasmanian Symphony, and commissions from many other artists and groups. Residencies have included the Sydney International Brass Festival and the Gravissimo! Festival in Portugal. Prizes and awards include the Corbould Composition Prize, the Qantas Youth Award of the Paul Lowin Prize, the Harvey Phillips Award (USA) for brass composition (for Concertino, written for Sérgio Carolino), and commendations in the National Songwriting Contest and the Albert H. Maggs Award. Andrew has written a lot of brass music, and some educational music is included in syllabi in Australia. A lot of his music has been performed, broadcast and recorded in Australia and around the world. Some works have also been test pieces for competitions in Australia and New Zealand. Andrew is published in Australia and the USA. ‘Dr Andrew’ recently returned to school to complete a PhD in Composition, supervised by Professor Stuart Greenbaum at the University of Melbourne. He is currently Program Leader for Academic Support at the Melbourne campus of the Australian Institute of Music.
