Steyl & Thomas editor agreed to publish José Vianna da Motta's Fantasiestück, op. 2 (Fantasy piece, op. 2) in May 1887 after unsuccessful attempts with Bote & Bockeditor and Breitkopf & Härtel editor. This princeps edition seems to be the oldest version of the work; there is no known manuscript. Indeed, some manuscripts of works published in his lifetime have been lost; Vianna da Motta probably destroyed them. Then in 1996 the Musicoteca editor published the Fantasiestück, op. 2, correcting some mistakes of the princeps edition and adding new mistakes. The edition we present results from a revision of the two previous editions, primacy given to the princepsedition in the cases of divergence of contents. The common mistakes in the first two editions are also corrected in this edition.
Several works on the life and work of Vianna da Motta refer to Fantasiestück, op. 2 composed around 1884. Reading Vianna da Motta's diaries allows us to identify the date of its composition. The first reference to the Fantasiestück, op. 2 is in April 1885, when Vianna da Motta presents his piece at Philipp Scharwenka's composition class. It was in the early days of June of that year that he considered his composition finished, although he occasionally corrected it up to its publication in 1887. In this month of June, his piano teacher, Xaver Scharwenka, suggested that he compose an introduction to the Fantasiestück, op. 2 "because it would give more effect to the theme, as it happens at the reprise" (translated from Portuguese), in the words of Xaver Scharwenka mentioned in Vianna da Motta's diary (cf. entrance of June 19th 1885, Diary 3, in Diários (1883-1893), coord. Christine Wassermann Beirão, transl. Elvira Archer). It is not known if this idea was adopted or if the repeat bar at measure 8a is the result of this suggestion. On the other hand, it is known from the notes of August Göllerich that Vianna da Motta played his Fantasiestück, op. 2 for Franz Liszt at a piano course in Weimar in the summer of 1885. It is possible that Vianna da Motta also received Liszt's advice on the interpretation and composition that led him to make changes to his composition.
Although it has been published several times and recorded by several pianists (such as António Rosado and Jean Alexis Smith), José Vianna da Motta's Fantasiestück, op. 2 has been widely ignored or even forgotten.
In the Fantasiestück, op. 2 there are two distinct musical atmospheres, between each of the sections (A, B and A'), that oppose each other: a serene one (at A and A'), a dramatic one (at B). Sections A (m. 1-33) and A' (m. 101-138) are written in the style of an accompanied melody with an intermediate voice written in counterpoint. The E major tone, the Tranquillo movement and the piano dynamics in A, the movement Più lento della prima volta and the Piu piano della prima volta dynamics in A', the first six notes of the theme written on an ascending diatonic scale and the constant accompaniment of sixteenth notes are all responsible for the bright and serene atmosphere of these sections. The B section (m. 34-100) has a vertical writing, syncopated, without much counterpoint. The E minor tone, the movement Molto agitato, the first six notes of the theme written on a downward diatonic scale, the crescendi molto and the accelerandos until the Presto marcato fortissimo and furioso of measure 78 are all responsible for the dark, agitated and dramatic atmosphere of the B section.
The melodic phrase of the Quasi Recitativo of measures 28 to 33, which serves as a transition between sections A and B, can be analyzed as two contrasting segments, consisting of three measures each: a first segment in which the initial part of the main theme (m. 1-2) appears in C major, under the fortissimo dynamics and with signals of marcato; a second segment, in E minor, under the piano dynamics with signals of legato, in which the melody of the first segment appears with changes on melodic intervals. This phrase reappears at the Grave marcato of measures 85 to 93 in section B with a melodic transformation on the first four eighth notes, transformation already presented on bar 80. However it is in the difference between the decor of this melody at the Quasi Recitativo and at the Grave marcato that the contrast between these two passages arises. This compositional process, which can be called "variation on the decor of the melody", is also used on measures 132 and 133 of the Più lento ma non troppo in section A'. In this passage, which can also be seen as a Coda, the initial part of the main theme in dolcissimo appears, for the first time, accompanied by triplets of sixteenth notes under the pianissimo dynamics and the indication una corda that give it a more celestial character than the previous appearances of the theme.
