Preface
José Vianna da Motta composed two pieces for solo piano entitled Meditação: the first piece of the Três Romances sem palavras, op. 51 composed in July, 1882 and Meditação (Méditation – in French as the manuscript version) composed in January, 1933 that we present in this edition. The several existing versions of the work reveal its evolution over time: the manuscript version of January, 1933 that Musicoteca used to publish the work in 1996, the publication at the Comércio do Porto Ilustrado in December, 1933 (princeps edition) and two copies of this publication both with handwritten notes by Vianna da Motta (copies V.M. 1150 and V.M. 1151 of the Vianna da Motta collection of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal). Only these two copies of the princeps edition and the manuscript version – which presents some phrasing lines unspecified in later versions – were taken into account for the revision and edition of this work.
Meditação is probably the most enigmatic piano work of Vianna da Motta. No other seems to have been written in a musical language so typical of modernists of the twentieth century, especially of Scriabin, particularly in the central section agitato of measures 35 to 50. The dedication made on the first page of the manuscript – "Pour A. L. L." – is also shrouded in mystery because it is unknown who these initials refer to. Below this dedication the composer later added "S. G. S.", which could be another dedication.
Five years after his composition, on May 9, 1938, Vianna da Motta premiered his work in Portugal, during an Orpheon Portuense concert in which he was honored on his seventieth birthday. The version of the work presented by Musicoteca (taken from the manuscript) was commercialized for the first time in 2018 by Toccata Classics, with an interpretation of the Portuguese pianist Luís Pipa recorded in 2008.
