Paulo Bastos was born in Vila Pouca de Aguiar. He first started studying music with Hélia Soveral at the Escola de Música do Porto. Later he studied at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo, where he was awarded the “Prize for the Best Student” and there he earned his BA in Composition. He then studied at the University of Aveiro where he earned his MMus in Theory and Musical Analysis. He had worked with several composers and groups as The Strasbourg Percussions, Sharon Kanach, Dieter Schnebel, Stefano Scodanibbio, Álvaro Salazar, Gerhard Stäbler, Jorge Peixinho, Nicolaus A. Huber, Virgilio Melo and Ken Valitsky. Much of his production focuses on chamber music and children's music, despite the significant number of orchestral works, solo instrument and electronics. Some premieres, recordings, as well as dedications of his music, have been aimed for groups and reputable quality musicians. His works are published in sheet music and CD by AVA Musical Editions Association Bar & Co, EMPA, Porto Editora and University of Minho. He teaches Analysis, Composition and Electronic Music at the Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga since 1996.
