At the age of twelve José Vianna da Motta composed the Polaca, op. 37 (Polonaise, op. 37) in E flat major which is one of his childhood works written between 1873 and 1883. Vianna da Motta assigned an opus number to most of his works but the changes he made throughout his life generate some confusion. Thus, the Polaca, op. 37 is presented in the childhood works section of the catalog published by Teresa Cascudo and Maria Helena Trindade in José Vianna da Motta: 50 anos depois da sua morte with the same opus number as the piece Gaieté, Galop op. 35. The analysis of the opus indications on the manuscripts of the Pensée Poétique, Rêverie op. 36 and the Polaca, op. 37 allows us to clarify this ambiguity. To the Pensée Poétique, Rêverie op. 36, Vianna da Motta first assigned the opus number 37 and later corrected it to the opus number 36 (although, due to an oversight, the correction was not made on the first page of the manuscript score but only on its cover). To the Polaca, op. 37, Vianna da Motta first assigned the opus number 35 and later corrected it to the opus number 37 (judging by the correction made on the first page of the manuscript score). The opus number 35 the composer assigned to the piece Gaieté, Galop op. 35corroborates the hypothesis that the definitive opus number of the Polaca, op. 37 is the number 37, not the number 35, since no amendment seems to have been made to the manuscript of the Gaieté, Galop op. 35.
Concerning the musical text of Vianna da Motta's works, there are often corrections that are thought to have been made after what is considered to be the final state of the composition (for example, corrections made in pencil are distinguished from the rest of the manuscript written in ink). The Polaca, op. 37 was corrected substantially by Vianna da Motta who scratched out five systems, the equivalent of one page of his manuscript. In this publication, the result of this elimination is presented as 2nd version of the Polaca, op. 37, the one which the composer certainly considered as the definitive version. But because of the musicological interest that the initial version could have for researchers, we also present a version that includes the scratched out systems which we called the 1st version. The 2nd version differs from the 1st one on two points: it does not include the scratched out measures 63 (and its anacrusis) to 94 (except for the anacrusis of b. 95) of the 1st version nor doest it include the C? note of measure 62 of the 1st version. We decided to eliminate this C? note because the composer only adds the minor seventh note to the first chord of a harmonic sequence when those sequences are of the type V-I and not of the type I-?VI (cf. b. 94-95 of the 1st version).
Below, a formal comparative analysis of the two versions highlights their points in common and their differences.

The upper staffs of measures 39, 41, 47, 49, 151, 153, 159 and 161 of the 1stversion were not written by Vianna da Motta as presented in this publication. In the manuscript, the composer does not specify how the scales fit into the metric. Below, a exact representation of the manuscript of the rhythm-metric relation for these musical passages:
[Example image]
The realization of these passages would not be questionable if the rhythm of the left hand had not been so precise or if the composer had indicated the part of the measure on which the scale should start. The reading of the manuscript only allows us to understand that the first note of the scale must be played after the octave of the right hand. The way in which the measures that present this ambiguity are published here comes from an editorial decision based on their analogy with measures 109 and 111 of the 2nd version (b. 141 and 143 of the 1st version).
