Silêncios, atmosferas e utopias (2008)
Commissioned by Antena 2/RTP/ Prémio Jovens Músicos 2008
Duration: ca. 3 minutes
Performance Notes:
Pedal use is a suggestion by the composer. Grace notes are to be performed before the beat.
Accidentals are valid for pitches on the same octave and for the duration of the same measure only. In certain occasions, the composer rewrites accidentals for clarity.
Program Notes: Silêncios, atmosferas e utopias, reflects my interest on the permutation of a single motif as well as on the use of textural contrasts.
The piece is divided into three distinct moods: contemplation, suggested by the repetitive patterns at the end of the motivic exposition and usually accompanied by a decrescendo in dynamics (example: measures 9-13), aggression, present in the fortissimo passages and at moments of alternate hand patterns (example: measures 2, 14, etc), and mystery suggested by the ‘far away voices’ at pianissimo dynamic levels (example: measures16- 18 and 33-35) representing the utopias.
As the piece develops, these moods start to reflect among themselves. For instance, at measures 19-22 and 36, contemplation and aggression are used together: dynamics show a crescendo and intervals become more dissonant.Equally, utopias (mystery) and aggression are combined at measures 33-34 due to the use of the low register by the left hand.
Finally, I should mention the fundamental and important role represented by the vast dynamic range.
