“Romance” was written in 1916 and dedicated to Miss Ema Coimbra, at the time a pupil of thecomposer, and to whom he became married in 1921.
As at the time, in Portugal, it would have been considered an impertinence to call a piece\”Romance\” and dedicate it to a pupil, the composer did not dare give the work a title. Instead,he placed a question mark on the top of the page. This question mark represented question hecould not ask directly due to ethical reasons. Luiz Barbosa wanted very much to know if hisfeelings were reciprocal. The strength of his feelings for her were quite obvious as thededication the composer wrote on the top left of the violin page leaves no room for doubt.
