At the age of thirteen José Vianna da Motta composed the Elegia, op. 45 (Elegy, op. 45) in C sharp minor which is one of his childhood works written between 1873 and 1883. Vianna da Motta had originally entitled this piece Nocturno-Elegia, op. 45 and had indicated for the main movement Andante mosso, quasi Adagio before giving it the title Elegia, op. 45 and the movement Andante non molto. These changes had significant consequences on the musical aesthetics of the piece (initially intended as a Nocturne) as well as on the significance of the piano writing (initially thought for a movement Andante mosso, quasi Adagio). This transformation may be related to the fact that Vianna da Motta crossed out the dedication to his piano teacher Joaquim Francisco de Azevedo Madeira to write "to the death of Ms. Margarida d'Assumpção Marques" (translated from Portuguese).
The Elegia, op. 45 is one of Vianna da Motta's compositions written in a style reminiscent of John Field's Nocturnes or those of Frédéric Chopin, by the exacerbated lyricism of the accompanied melody and by its virtuoso melodic variations. Although this style is also present in the pieces Pensée Poétique, Rêverie op. 36 and Lamentação, op. 51 no. 3, it cannot be considered as representative of Vianna da Motta's work. The composer abandoned this style relatively early to devote himself mainly to the different ways of expressing the decoration of the melodies, a technique that is present in the Elegia, op. 45 as can be seen from the analysis of subsections a1' and a2' of the structural scheme below.

The triplets of sixteenth of the left hand that accompany the melodic variations of the right hand participate in the decoration of the melody, giving to this passage a musical atmosphere contrasting with the one generated by the accompaniment in sixteenth of the subsections a1 and a2.
Several facts suggest that Vianna da Motta wanted the Introduction (b. 1-5) to be played with the left hand only: the half rests written in the upper voice; the arpeggioof bar 5; the bridge (b. 66-69) where the writing forces the right hand to play the upper voice. Three months before the composition of this piece, Vianna da Motta wrote a piece for the left hand: Resignação, op. 39. It thus seems legitimate to assume that, at that time, the development of the left hand was at the heart of Vianna da Motta's pianistic and compositional concerns.
