At the age of twelve José Vianna da Motta composed the Pensée Poétique, Rêverie op. 36 in E flat minor which is classed with his childhood works written between 1873 and 1883. Vianna da Motta first assigned the opus number 37 to this piece and later corrected it to the opus number 36 (although, due to an oversight, the correction was not made on the first page of the manuscript score but only on its cover). The opus number 37 of the Polaca corroborates this hypothesis, even though Vianna da Motta initially assigned the opus number 35 to this piece (cf. correction made on the first page of the manuscript score). Given that no amendment appears to have been made in the Gaieté, Galop op. 35 manuscript, it is possible to conclude that the definitive opus number of the Polaca is 37 and that, consequently, the definitive opus number of the Pensée Poétique, Rêverie is 36.
This is perhaps Vianna da Motta's first composition written in a style reminiscent of John Field's Nocturnes or those of Frédéric Chopin, by the exacerbated lyricism of the accompanied melody and by its virtuosos melodic variations. Although this style is also present in the pieces Elegia, op. 45 and Lamentação, op. 51 no. 3, it cannot be considered as representative of Vianna da Motta's work. The composer abandons this style relatively early to devote himself mainly to the different ways of working the decoration of the melodies.
The complexity of the harmonic architecture of the Pensée Poétique, Rêverie op. 36 (which can be observed in the structural scheme below) contrasts with the other Vianna da Motta's childhood works, most of which only explore the tones close to the main tonality. Thus, the style of pianistic writing and the harmonic architecture of the Pensée Poétique, Rêverie op. 36 make this piece stand out compared to works of the same period.

Concerning the work on compositional material, the accompaniment of the left hand in section A' is perhaps the most relevant characteristic of the work. Inspired by the first four notes of the main theme which appear in bar 13, this accompaniment acquires an almost melodic character that places it in a situation of dialogue with the main theme when it reappears.
In bar 12, Vianna da Motta writes "a tempo" and "(? = 84)". However, according to the metronomic indications of bars 1 and 10, the quarter note value is 72. It is possible that the metronomic indications were added in a later period and that Vianna da Motta forgot to replace the a tempo indication of bar 12 by an indication like un poco più mosso.
