According to the catalog of José Vianna da Motta published under the direction of Maria Helena Trindade and Teresa Cascudo in José Vianna da Motta: 50 anos depois da sua morte, the Zwei Klavierstücke nach A. Böcklin (Two piano pieces after A. Böcklin) corresponds to Opus 10. However, in his manuscript, Vianna da Motta gives them the number 9. In the catalog organized by João de Freitas Branco in Viana da Mota: uma contribuição para o estudo da sua personalidade e da sua obra, the author respects the indication of the composer but makes the following observation: "Viana da Mota has organized the numbering of his works more than once. As a result, several pieces have the same opus number. The definitive opus 9 certainly corresponds to Cenas Portuguesas". Thus, it is possible that Maria Helena Trindade and Teresa Cascudo gave the number 10 to the Zwei Klavierstücke nach A. Böcklin to avoid the repetition of the number 9 in his works for piano solo. For clarity, we chose not to present opus number in this first edition.
According to Vianna da Motta's diary, the titles of the pieces "Meeresidylle" and "Im Spiel der Wellen" were attributed on November 8th, 1891. That day, Vianna da Motta writes:
"By noon, [I was] at Hausm.[ann]'s. Then, at Langh.[ans]'s. I played him my pieces, that he found a bit «aqueous». We ended up baptizing them after Böcklin" (translated from Portuguese) (in Diários (1883-1893), coord. Christine Wassermann Beirão, transl. Elvira Archer).
It is accepted that this naming determines the end of the composition of the pieces. However, the most interesting revelation of this citation concerns the creative process that established the relation between the pieces and the titles. Even though these pieces may seem to arise from an inspiration from the paintings "Meeresidylle" (1887) and "Im Spiel der Wellen" (1883) by the painter Arnold Böcklin, this narration reveals that the titles of Vianna da Motta's pieces came after their compositions, which means that it was the music that evoked the pictures and not the pictures that inspired the music. It is nonetheless useful to the interpreter to know Böcklin's paintings and the circumstances of the naming of Vianna da Motta's pieces in so far as the observation of Friedrich Wilhelm Langhans and the resulting association of the pieces with the paintings inevitably and permanently marked the pieces of Vianna da Motta. Indeed, the observation suggests musical images that were present when listening, images that allow us to imagine the aesthetics, the character and the sonority of Vianna da Motta's interpretation. The association reveals the elaboration of the thought which translated those musical images into pictorial images. From this perspective, any musical interpretation based on the observation of these paintings will allow one to approach the creative thought that was at the origin to the association.
The pieces of this cycle contain a rather atypical unifying element: a common cell theme which takes on different expressions in each piece, a consequence of their respective characters. The use of the key of A major in the two pieces also contributes to the unity of the cycle.
The a piece, "Meeresidylle", is essentially characterized by the accompaniment that supports the melody. Composed of short and varied rhythmic values – sixteenths, sextuplets of sixteenths and thirty-second notes –, the accompaniment creates multiple movements that act on the tempo perception regardless of the Andante con motoindication which presides over the piece. The culmination point of the compositional work on this material begins at measure 63, in a passage where its elements are organized in a kind of rhythm accelerando, despite the indications poco ritardando and largo con passione which imply that the tempo undergoes an elongation.
Beginning from measure 29 we have one of the musical passages that may have caused Langhans' "aqueous" feeling. The arpeggiated chords, the numerous sixths, sevenths and ninths, the indications pianissimo, dolcissimo and una corda associated with the use of the damper pedal (which Vianna da Motta certainly used) create a musical atmosphere potentially evocative of "aqueous" images. Regarding the interpretation of this passage, and the passages of bars 8 to 11 and bars 73 to 79, it is desirable not to do a crescendo which could mislead the ascending melodic line.
The b piece, "Im Spiel der Wellen" is distinguished by its quasi scherzandocharacter, which results from the movement Allegro con Spirito, the indication molto giocoso, the arpeggiated chords, the staccato and non legato sixteenth notes mostly accompanied by the piano and the pianissimo dynamics, the staccatissimo eighth notes, the accents on the weak parts of the beat, etc. It is also through the sequence of several of these elements in a short period of time that this scherzando character emanates, particularly in theme appearances: staccato eighth note, non staccato eighth note, sixteenth note and eighth note staccato, eighth note accentuated in the weak part of the beat and tied to the strong part of the following beat, series of staccato sixteenth notes, etc.
The approach consisting on identifying passages that evoked the water in Langhans would likely prove to be unsuccessful or arbitrary. It seems possible to accept the hypothesis that if the b piece, "Im Spiel der Wellen", also evoked the underwater world to Langhans it is because he was immersed in the atmosphere of the a piece, "Meersidylle". According to this hypothesis, the b piece does not exists as such without the a piece. They exist as a whole which finds its musical coherence in a sequenced audition. This hypothesis corroborates, moreover, the idea that, for Vianna da Motta, the organization of these pieces in alphabetical order (a and b) rather than in numerical order (1 and 2) strengthen its cohesion.
