Composer, pianist, teacher, spreader and lecturer.
Has a diploma in Piano and Composition by the Lisbon and Porto Conservatories. Has a Doctorate degree from the University of Paris I (1975/83) with a Doctorat d'Etat (unfinished) by the Universities of Paris I-Paris IV (1983/2000). He attended courses in Portugal, Spain, Holland, Germany, France, etc, with Nadia Boulanger, Aloys and Alphonse Kontarsky, Gerard Frémy, Stockhausen, Kagel, Ligeti, Posseur, Boulez, Xenakis. He studied analysis and conducting with Gilbert Amy and Michel Tabachnik. Attended stages and electronic music courses and computer music at the Universities of Paris VIII (Vincennes), Paris I and II (Paris-Sorbonne and Phantéon-Sorbonne) (1975/1978), in CEMAMu in 1978 and beyond, and at IRCAM (1981/19991). Was fellow, for years, of the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Secretariat of State for Culture.
He served compulsory military service as an officer, in Portugal and in Guinea (1965/1968)
Collaborates in the Encyclopedias of Verbo Editions, since 1972. He wrote for the Jornal de Notícias (1982/1992). Has created, for television and radio, in the 80s, some program series. He was president of the Juventude Musical de Braga and commentator of concert seasons of the J.M. of Porto, Pró-Arte Círculo de Cultura Musical, the Secretary of State of Culture, and other associations and institutions in the North. He was artistic director of Weeks of Semanas de Música de Viana do Castelo (1987/1989).
He was director and member of the directions of Braga and Porto (1974-75) Music Conservatories (1972/73). He also was Professor Coordinator of the Porto School of Music between 1986 and 2000. He participated in Music Teaching Reforms of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He is the author of the composition program of the Music School of Porto from 1986 to 2001. Has founded, in 1973, the Grupo Música Nova.
He promoted and presented in 1973 a memorable meeting with Xenakis, in Trinity Cinema, Porto, by the Juventude Musical de Braga e do Porto.
Invited and organized, in 1992, experts from IRCAM, the Georges Pompidou Centre, for a two-day conference on computer music at the French Institute of Porto.
From 1973 and for about 20 years, promoted study tours from the northern schools to Gulbenkian Contemporary Music Encounters with the collaboration of the Music Services of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
He gave lectures in several countries, including Mexico, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain.
The OCEANoS works and A-MÈR-ES (an order of the Gulbenkian Foundation, through a proposal in Paris, Xenakis, and dedicated to him, like OCEANS), composed between 1978 and 1979 introduce for the first time in Portuguese music, and in orchestra, electronic ways and electroacoustic ways. Both works were premiered in 1979 at the Rivoli, by the Symphony Orchestra of Porto, directed by Gunther Arglebe, and at the Grand Auditorium of the Gulbenkian Foundation, by the Gulbenkian Orchestra, conducted by Michel Tabachnik. A-MÈR-ES was presented, 30 years after its debut at the Festival Musica Viva 2009 by the Gulbenkian Orchestra, at the initiative of Miguel Azguime and Pedro Amaral, who directed (and put it on Youtube), both played a key role in computer support and electroacoustic, and on the scanning of the score, which had the support of the Music Services of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
In the same, year premiered, in 2009, the work "MÚSICAS DE VILLAIANA-coros oceânicos " for orchestra (musicians also reading the text of the charter), choir, electroacoustic, audiovisual, multimedia, narrator, rapper and public (which can use telecommunications facilities -cellphones in real time and deferred time). It was an order of the Municipality of Viana do Castelo, in the celebrations of the 750 years of the city charter.
In this Live Music Festival 2009, were dedicated to him several concerts performing 11 their works.
Wrote chamber music, orchestra, choir and orchestra, for choir, solo instruments, for voice and instruments, music for theater, electronic music, electroacoustic, computer, multimedia. He composed work series for children and youth (1963/1967 / 1980/2012) like the 82 Cadernos de Invenções, for all instruments, and each book consists of a series of 10 small pieces.
At the invitation of the Casa da Música gave lectures about MELODY (Porto / 2001) and about the MARTEAU SANS MAÎTRE by Pierre Boulez (2005), about works for chorus by Xenakis-Victoria (2011). The foundation even ordered the GESTOS-CIRCUS-CÍRCULOS (Porto/2001/Miguel Azguime, Festival Música Viva, Grupo Musica Nova), HÉAMAÓAMAÉH-sulcos.silêncios (2006/2007, REMIX Ensemble). In 2007, the National Orchestra of Porto debuted in Suggia Room, the LUMINA-olhar e o mar, ordered bu the Municipality of Matosinhos.
The work for one or more clarinets, NCÂÃNCÔA , was selected, in 2005, by the Festival "World New Music Days" in Switzerland.
The Gulbenkian Portuguese center of Paris, where he presented his book Origens e Segredos da Música Portuguesa Contemporânea (2004), organized a concert with his works and work of Pascal Dusapin (present at the concert), by the Grupo Música Nova e pelo Ensemble Accroche Note (2006).
They are edited books, essays and texts of various kinds in various publications. Awaiting publication, are interviews with Iannis Xenakis, György Ligeti and Pierre Boulez (1982/97). Designed at the light of an interdisciplinary thinking and perspective of contemporary composer, he wrote to the Council of Matosinhos texts about the Neoclassicism and the Impressionism and brief essays about Piano in Romanticism and about the piano sonatas of Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert .
Are published, on disk, works to various instrumental and vocal training, and theoretical texts (especially the Matosinhos Chamber's initiatives and his mentor, Dr. Manuel Dias da Fonseca).
Has just been released a double CD with 10 of his works by the Grupo Música Nova, for solo instruments, duo, group and others with audiovisual and multimedia nature.
The press has always highlighted as a composer activity, instrumentalist and popularizer in all areas in which he has exercised his activity, including the television series in the 80’s.
He has collaborated on doctoral projects at the Catholic University and the University of Porto.
He is a professor /researcher at INET-MD, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
